Case Studies: Arnold Residence

For this project the Arnolds presented us with several design challenges that forced us to design outside of the A-typical uses of space. First and foremost the client wanted to replace the deteriorating timber wall and replace the stairs leading up to the main entry to the front door. The use of a natural field stone retaining wall re-defines the entry and compliments the new granite risers and bluestone treads. Atop the wall a small planting bed filled with annuals maintains a variety of color throughout the changing seasons. Secondly, the Arnolds wanted to make a stronger connection and more accessible pathway leading to the back yard where the pool is located. Existing was a small worn pathway defined only by the mulch on the ground that leads guest to the back pool area. By extending the bluestone from the entry walkway a true defined path leads houseguests to the back yard. Finally, the clients wanted a space to entertain guest as well as an area to gather and relax for themselves. Typically the back yard is where most people entertain and gather but the pool in the back leaves little room for entertainment and solitude. The Arnolds property, which is set far of the road and has a natural screen on all sides allowed us to create a wonderful space in the front yard where a natural plateau defined the new patio. The new path to the back yard winds down and opens up to a bluestone patio that follows the natural contours of the existing landscape beautifully. The use of a Fieldstone wall to retain the existing grade and also create a small nook to gather on those cool fall days around this outdoor fireplace. A wonderful detail and final piece to the completion of this patio was the wrought iron screen house that allows the Arnolds to eat outdoors and entertain into the evening without the bugs of the summer months being a bother. The end result of all these individual details is this sprawling patio that fits into the landscape so naturally and compliments the scale of the house.
