Landscape Design and Construction Testimonials
“We were Curtiss Landscape Design's first customer more than 25 years ago. At the time, our front yard was a bare hill, half soil and half ledge with a bunch of untrimmed trees. They created a plan that was both beautiful and interesting with a variety of trees, plants, walks and stone walls. Over the years the folks at Curtiss, who have always been terrific to work with, have maintained our yard and added a patio, stone walls and new varieties of plantings. The appearance of our yard has aged wonderfully. There are many beautiful homes in our neighborhood, but none has more beautiful landscaping than ours.”

"I have worked with Curtiss Landscape for over twenty years in two different homes. They designed, installed and maintained everything in my yards including shrubbery, gardens, lawns, rock walls and patios. Their work was superb and on budget through every phase of both projects. Most impressively, they have continued to deliver the highest level of service year in and year out as they maintain and update my lawn, gardens and shrubbery. I highly recommend Curtiss Landscape"

“When the snow melted in April, 1993, what a shock it was for us to realize the “landscaping” in front of our newly purchased home consisted of a weed-strewn “lawn” and one flower bed which sported several sickly shrubs, but little else.
Hearing that Doug Curtiss Garden Landscape Design was the best in town, we quickly made the call. Doug came to our rescue.
Not only did Doug and his excellent crew design and plant the stunning gardens, they also created a new, flowing, brick walkway interspersed with granite steps. The walk is bordered by an ever-changing English perennial garden that provides an attractive and colorful entrance to the house.
Our association and collaboration with Doug Curtiss Landscape Design, from the initial meeting and design presentation, through the plantings which have taken place over the years to the excellent care and maintenance of the landscape, has been gratifying. Our choice to use the Curtiss organization was one of the best decisions we have made.”

Working with Curtiss Landscape was a pleasure. Our project was not just about the layout and design, it was also about the engineering and structure of a very long and tall retaining wall that was to change the layout of our yard forever. From the very beginning it was obvious that Curtiss understood all the issues and ramifications a project of this size could have; from issues of drainage to sunlight and materials they architected a design that took everything into clear consideration. Curtiss also takes a refreshing approach that is rarely seen today. The people they employee were not just great and dedicated workers, but most impressively they each were seasoned veterans in their field and always able to clearly explain the work being done to both myself and my wife in plain clear english. The landscape they designed for us and implemented was nothing short of amazing. They created a haven for us that lets us not only increase the value of our home but also has given us a whole new place to spend our time outdoors. A truly special place!

“When we started construction on our home the land consisted of trees, trees and more trees. After the home was completed the land surrounding the house was muck, clay and rocks. I remember calling Doug for help in designing a patio. Doug listened as I explained that we have a huge extended family and we wanted a place where all our relatives could gather for barbeques and outdoor parties. He talked to me about seating and tables and he pointed out that I could never fit enough tables and chairs on a patio to accommodate the family. He smiled and I could see his wheels turning and finally he said that a circular patio with curved sitting walls would fulfill the dilemma with seating and tables.
Doug’s design integrated my favorite materials with the functionality I had only dreamed of, stonewalls and antique brick let the moss grow beautifully along the edges. Not only do we use the walls to sit and eat on all summer long but they are also used to display planters of annuals that I just can’t seem to resist buying. Doug then took the design a step further and incorporated my love of roses by creating a garden area behind the stone walls that catch the morning sun and allow the Roses to thrive. This is my favorite place to spend time with family and friends. This is the spot where all the good news of our lives is shared. I hope that Doug knows what a treasure he created.
Not one to simply design and create stonewalls; Doug always adds some element of surprise and delight to the design. When we talked about how I envisioned the walls and walkways Doug got really excited about the idea of a stone bench incorporated into the stone walls at the pool. I will never forget the day the crane came with the stone bench attached…this huge crane coordinated by Doug so the bench would be “Just So”. I can picture him laughing when I walked out of the back door in shock at the sheer magnitude of the project.
Doug always was able to integrate function with form while keeping that perfect balance with the natural surroundings of our yard. Harmony is what I was seeking and Harmony was what Doug always gave. Clearly Doug enjoys designing and, unlike many designers, listens first and really takes the time to learn what the client wants. Many times he would make suggestions of things I had never even thought about. After the design, the follow through was precise. He maintained supervision down to the most minute detail. I love his easygoing style, gentle laugh and love of the environment. It always made me feel safe in taking that leap to make the needed changes.”
